AP® 2-D Design Portfolio (Photography, Traditional and Digital)
Course Overview
This course offers the exceptionally talented photography student the opportunity to participate in the Advanced Placement Program. It prepares them for the AP® Studio Art Portfolio in May and enables them to acquire a true appreciation and understanding of fine art photography. Students will work with both traditional and digital formats. Although a camera is not mandatory, it is highly suggested, as there will be work required outside of school hours. A photography student at this level is required to have good knowledge of design concepts and therefore design will also be an important component in the course.
The time commitment for this class is not as demanding as a drawing -based portfolio submission; however, the course is designed to meet the requirements of an entry level college course. Students are expected to meet deadlines, complete the requirements of the AP® Portfolio and operate more independently than in a “regular” high school class. Students must be willing to spend time outside of the regular school day to complete some assignments, as would be expected of any college student.
AP® Studio Art Portfolio: A 2-D Design Portfolio may be entirely photography, no drawing is required. There are three sections to the Portfolio:
Class Text
Horenstein, Henry. Black and White: A Basic Manual, 3rd Ed.
Stewart, Mary. Launching the Imagination: A Comprehensive Guide to Basic Design.
Teacher Created Student Guide for AP Studio 2-D - online beginning in the 2013-2014 school year!
Digital Software
Adobe Photoshop CS4 and CS5
Exhibitions and Competitions
You will be required to participate in the AP Spring Art Show that is held in conjunction with the Spring Musical in April. In addition, you will enter at least one entry into the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards in January.

AP® Studio Art Portfolio: A 2-D Design Portfolio may be entirely photography, no drawing is required. There are three sections to the Portfolio:
- Quality: Five actual works that demonstrate your mastery of design/photography.
- Concentration: Works describing an in-depth exploration of a particular design concern. 12 images of your work are required. A short written commentary on your body of work is required.
- Breadth: A variety of works demonstrating your understanding of the principles of design. 12 images of your work are required.
- Can contain work that you have done over a single year or longer, in class or on your own.
- Will be evaluated by a minimum of three and a maximum of seven artist-educators. Each of the three sections is reviewed independently based on criteria for that section, and each caries equal weight.
